Business History and geopolitical challenges
We kindly invite the Business History community to a conference in Berlin in Summer 2027! The conference’s theme will be geopolitical challenges while, as always, sessions and papers for other topics are also welcome.
The conference theme: Geopolitical tensions have always posed significant challenges for corporations worldwide. This impact extends beyond military conflict and the armament industry to include virtually all branches. Potential consequences are disruptions or redirection of trade flows, shortages of raw materials or labour, expropriation and other political interventions, disconnection between headquarters and foreign subsidiaries, loss of foreign markets, the politization of marketing activities, increased insurance premiums due to elevated risks, cultures of secret business and smuggling, colonial dependence and independence, etc. While business history has addressed related issues in various studies, the specific effects of geopolitical challenges have not been examined systematically. Berlin offers an ideal setting for this discussion, having been at the centre of the Cold War not only politically but also economically. However, the scope of the conference for sure must not be restricted to this historical period.

Dissertation prize: EBHA’s dissertation prize will be awarded at the 2027 conference. Please look for the parallel call and the conference website.
Best Early Career Paper: EBHA regularly awards the best paper submitted by early career scholar (5 years after Ph.D. defence) to the conference. Please find instructions how to apply for this competition on the conference website.
Fee waivers: EBHA offers grants for PhD students and early-career scholars planning to attend the EBHA Congress 2027. These grants will take the form of registration fee waivers. Details can be found on the conference website.
The conference venue: The conference will take place in the main building of Humboldt-University of Berlin directly located in the city centre. This historical building dating from 1766 and was originally built as the Prince’s Palace, was dedicated to the university on its foundation in 1828. We will have the benefit of very pleasant historical surroundings, equipped with modern conference technology. Hotels, restaurants and bars are available nearby, catering for all tastes.
The organisers: The conference will be organized by Alexander Nützenadel (Professor of Economic and Social History at Humboldt-University) as the main host together with EBHA’s former president Andrea Schneider (head of German Society for Business History) and EBHA council member Jan-Otmar Hesse (Professor of Economic and Social History at the University of Bayreuth).
