About Bergen
Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, is nestled among
seven mountains on the western coast of the country. The city
– marketed as “The Gateway to the
Fjords” – used to be the commercial link between
the North and the rest of Europe. The characteristic landmark
Bryggen
is a series of offices and warehouses previously occupied by
the Hanseatic League. As the only surviving Hansa Kontor, the
buildings have been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list.
With a population of 250,000 people, Bergen is
a bustling commercial and cultural city. Among the most important
economic activities are trade, shipping and education –
the university and colleges attract some 30,000 students. There
is also a large number of festivals and exhibitions – fitting
for the hometown of composer Edvard Grieg.
